Villarreal Crom

Villarreal Crom is an Argentine tango duo formed in 2010 by vocalist and guitarist Juan Villarreal, born in Puerto San Julián, Patagonia, and guitarist Patricio Noé Crom, a Buenos Aires native who studied tango guitar at the Academia Nacional del Tango under maestro Aníbal Arias. Beginning in milongas and clubs throughout Buenos Aires, the pair developed a distinctive aesthetic rooted in acoustic guitar arrangements and vocal performance. Over nearly fifteen years and six studio albums, they have become among the most recognized contemporary tango acts globally, touring extensively across Latin America, Europe, and North America. Their repertoire blends interpretations of canonical tango standards—notably their 2022 tribute to Juan D’Arienzo—with wholly original compositions, particularly featured on 2023’s Moderno Trovador. The duo has performed at major venues including Buenos Aires’ CCK Symphonic Hall and international festivals such as Lyon Tango Festival, Philadelphia Tango Festival, and La Locura Tango Musik Festival in Austria. Their innovative use of extended guitar techniques (seven-string, piccolo, charango, and shakuhachi) distinguishes their sound within contemporary tango while maintaining fidelity to the genre’s emotional and rhythmic foundations.
