Juan Villarreal
Also known as: Juan Pablo Villarreal
Biography
Juan Villarreal is a contemporary Argentine tango singer, guitarist, composer, and dancer. Born in Puerto San Julián, Patagonia, and raised in Río Gallegos, he is the son of Luis Villarreal, a prominent cultural figure and founder of the Festival Juvenil Patagónico del Folclore de San Julián. A self-taught musician, Villarreal discovered tango in his youth and developed his craft through practical musical engagement rather than formal training. He has emerged as one of the leading voices of contemporary tango, recognized for his distinctive interpretations of classic tangos and original compositions. Since 2010, he has been the voice of Orquesta El Arranque, one of Argentina’s most important modern tango orchestras, while also performing as a guitarist and vocalist in the Dúo Villarreal-Crom with guitarist Patricio Crom, as well as collaborating with the Argentine-Norwegian ensemble El Muro Tango. His work spans tango, folklore, and fusion traditions, with performances and recordings across Latin America, Europe, and the United States. Villarreal’s approach to tango emphasizes dance-friendly interpretations and fresh arrangements of the classical repertoire.
