Sexteto Milonguero

Also known as: Sexteto Milonguero

About

Sexteto Milonguero was a contemporary tango ensemble founded by vocalist Javier Di Ciriaco in Buenos Aires in 2006. Formed with the explicit goal of maintaining danceable, milonga-style tango at a time when many ensembles had shifted toward concert formats, the group became one of the most recognized contemporary tango orchestras. Over fourteen years, the sextet toured extensively across Argentina, performed two Latin American tours, fourteen European tours spanning twenty countries, and visited Canada, Singapore, China, and the USA (2017–2018). The ensemble’s core repertoire emphasized 1940s classics while incorporating original compositions and diverse influences—Argentine folklore, jazz, classical, and rock—each member contributing to the group’s distinctive musical voice. Notable members included vocalist Javier Di Ciriaco, violinists Marisol Canessa and Gustavo Garay, bandoneon player Ignacio Claramonte, bassist Alejandro Abbonizio, and pianist Juan Rivero in later years. The group recorded four studio albums: Pa’ que Bailen (2007), 7 (2010), Doble o Nada (2013), and Pa’ Que Bailen, Vol. 4 (2022). A documentary titled Joyride (2017) chronicled the ensemble’s tenth-anniversary European tour. Sexteto Milonguero disbanded in July 2020.

Sources note: Band member lineup changed significantly over the ensemble’s 14-year existence. Early sources (2006–2007) list: Mauricio Jost and Diego Braconi (bandoneón), Cristian Sepúlveda (bass), Mariano Laplume (violin), and Gervasio Ledesma (piano). Later sources from 2019–2020 list: Ignacio Claramonte (bandoneón), Gustavo Garay (violin), Alejandro Abbonizio (bass), and Juan Rivero (piano). Marisol Canessa (violin) and Javier Di Ciriaco (vocals) appear consistently. These differences reflect natural personnel changes over time rather than factual inconsistencies.
