Also known as: Milonga Roots, Pablo Woiz & Milonga Roots Trio, Pablo Woiz & Milonga Roots Quintett

About

Pablo Woiz & Milonga Roots is a Berlin-based tango ensemble founded circa 2016–2017, led by Argentine pianist Pablo Woiz, who has lived in Berlin since 2007. The ensemble explores the musical roots of Rio de la Plata rhythms—tango, milonga, vals, zamba, and Argentine folklore—with particular emphasis on uncovering the African percussive foundations of these traditions. The ensemble performs in two principal configurations: a trio (piano, bass, percussion) and a quintet (with added bandoneon and double bass). The original trio lineup featured Woiz on piano, Israeli bassist Or Rozenfeld, and percussionist Martín Iannacone. The ensemble’s 2017 debut album Vol. 1 (Iannaco label) showcases Woiz’s arrangements of traditional compositions and original works, blending classic tango with jazz influences and contemporary interpretations. Woiz has collaborated with prominent tango figures including Juan José Mosalini, Luis Stazo, Julia Zenko, and Alfredo Marcucci, and the ensemble has performed at major European venues and tango festivals including Tarbes en Tango and events in Berlin, Zurich, and Copenhagen. The project represents a bridge between traditional Buenos Aires tango aesthetics and modern European interpretations of Argentine music.
