About

Donato Racciatti y Su Orquesta Típica was a prominent Uruguayan tango orchestra founded in 1948 by Italian-born bandoneonist, conductor, and composer Donato Racciatti di Nardo (1918–2000). Established at the Hotel Nogaró in Punta del Este, Uruguay, the orchestra quickly gained continental fame following its collaboration with iconic vocalist Nina Miranda in the early 1950s. The ensemble’s musical style—straightforward, rhythmic, and highly accessible—drew frequent comparison to Juan D’Arienzo’s approach, though executed with simpler orchestration. The orchestra’s vocal roster featured legendary singers including Nina Miranda (whose recordings with the orchestra became signature works), Olga Delgrossi, Carlos Roldán, and Argentine vocalists Víctor Ruiz, Luis Correa, and Alfredo Dalton, among others. Recording primarily for the Uruguayan Sondor label from 1949 onwards, with additional releases on Patria and Orfeo, Racciatti produced a prolific discography spanning tangos, milongas, valses, polkas, and candombes. Notable compositions include “Hasta siempre amor,” “Vencida,” “Tu corazón,” and “Sin estrellas,” many with lyrics by poet Federico Silva. The orchestra maintained an active presence in Buenos Aires radio and television through the 1960s and remained recording into the 1980s, touring extensively throughout Argentina, Uruguay, and Japan.
