Biography
Donato Racciatti di Nardo (18 October 1918, Guilmi, Chieti, Italy – 27 May 2000, Montevideo, Uruguay) was a Uruguayan bandoneonist, orchestra conductor, and composer of Italian origin. At five months of age, his family relocated to Montevideo, where he spent his entire artistic career. Racciatti began performing publicly with “Los Brujos” and the Laurenz–Casella orchestra (1940–1945) before working as a solo vocalist supporting Luis Alberto Fleitas. In 1948, he established his own orquesta típica, which became a defining force in Uruguayan popular tango through its emphasis on accessible, rhythmical dance music. He commenced recording for Sondor in 1949 and maintained prolific recording relationships with Patria and Orfeo. His most successful period (1953–1960) featured prominent vocalists including Nina Miranda, Carlos Roldán, and Olga Delgrossi. A masterful composer, Racciatti created works such as “Hasta siempre amor” (composed with lyricist Federico Silva, 1953), “Vencida,” “Morocho y cantor,” and “Sin estrellas.” Using the pseudonym Bota, he also composed candombes, polkas, rancheras, and jotas. His orchestra achieved significant popularity in Argentina, Japan, and across Latin America, maintaining radio presence in Buenos Aires and hosting broadcasts on Radio Carve until 1972. He died in Montevideo following cardiovascular complications.
