About
Bajofondo is a contemporary electrotango ensemble founded in 2001 by Argentine producer Gustavo Santaolalla and Uruguayan producer Juan Campodónico. Based in the Río de la Plata region spanning Argentina and Uruguay, the collective was created to give “a vision and sonority to Rioplatense urban life” through electronic music with Latin roots. Rather than pure tango revivalism, Bajofondo fuses traditional Argentine and Uruguayan musical forms—tango, milonga, candombe, and murga—with contemporary electronic, rock, hip-hop, and jazz elements, creating what critics call “contemporary music of the Río de la Plata.”
The ensemble’s sound is anchored by core members including keyboardist Luciano Supervielle, bandoneón player Martín Ferrés, and vocalist Verónica Loza, alongside percussionists and string players. Their debut album, Bajofondo Tango Club (2002), achieved triple-platinum status and won both Argentina’s Gardel Prize and a Latin Grammy for Best Instrumental Pop Album, establishing the group as innovators in contemporary tango. The ensemble continued evolving through four subsequent studio albums, with Presente (2013)—featuring expanded string arrangements—winning a Latin Grammy for Best Instrumental Album. Their music has reached audiences primarily through film, television, and commercial placements rather than radio, gaining international recognition through collaborations and placements in productions like the Brazilian soap “A Favorita” and the 2012 Russian Olympic gymnastics team. The group received a Konex Prize in 2015 as one of Argentina’s top five pop groups of the decade.
