Alberto di Paulo y su Orquesta

Also known as: Alberto Di Paulo y su Orquesta, Orquesta de Alberto Di Paulo

About

Alberto di Paulo y su Orquesta was a prominent Argentine tango orchestra founded in 1952 by bandoneonist and conductor Alberto Di Paulo. Based in Buenos Aires, the ensemble became known for its refined arrangements and incorporation of string sections, which distinguished it from traditional tango formations. From 1957, the orchestra frequently accompanied notable vocalists including Alberto Echagüe, Armando Laborde, and Alberto Marino. The ensemble gained international recognition after conductor Xavier Cugat selected Di Paulo’s orchestral arrangements for RCA Victor recordings released simultaneously throughout the Americas and Japan in 1961. Over decades of activity, the orchestra recorded for multiple labels including RCA Victor (1960s), Fermata (1966), and Magenta (1972–1982). The ensemble was also known for arranging American jazz standards in tango style. Di Paulo served as musical director for television productions on Argentine Channel 7 and directed compilations for Reader’s Digest and Selecciones magazine. The orchestra represented the sophisticated evolution of tango orchestration during the genre’s later golden age, bridging traditional dance-band idioms with contemporary harmonic and instrumental innovations.
