Also known as: Antonio J. Di Paolo, Al Di Paolo

Biography

Alberto di Paulo (Antonio J. Di Paolo; 12 July 1929 – 13 July 2011) was an Argentine bandoneonist, orchestra conductor, composer, and arranger dedicated to tango music. Born in Buenos Aires, he began musical training at age six under his father’s guidance, initially studying violin at Professor Furzi’s conservatory before being drawn to the bandoneon. In 1952, he formed his own orchestra and performed on Radio Libertad and in neighborhood salons. He gained prominence in the late 1950s accompanying vocalist Alberto Marino for RCA Victor, recording “Telón” and “La calle sin sueño” with expanded string arrangements. His 1961 album “Alberto di Paulo, su bandoneón y su orquesta” was released across the Americas and Japan following endorsement by conductor Xavier Cugat. Throughout the 1960s–1980s, Di Paulo served as arranger and conductor for numerous projects, including the 1966 “14 para el tango” initiative and collaborations with vocalists Alberto Podestá and Nelly Omar. He composed “Mi bandoneón está triste” on the day Aníbal Troilo died (18 May 1975). Though his career spanned tango’s entire twentieth-century era, he remains largely forgotten outside collector circles.

Sources note: Birth year discrepancy: Most authoritative sources (MusicBrainz, Spanish Wikipedia, Todotango.com, Wikidata) record birth as 12 July 1929; however, tango.info lists birth as 12 July 1926. Death date (13 July 2011) is consistent across all sources.
