V. Vilardi

Biography

Vicente Vilardi was an Argentine bandoneon player and composer active in tango during the 1930s and 1940s. He performed as a bandoneón player in Edgardo Donato’s orchestra, one of the prominent ensembles of the era known as “Los ocho ases del tango porteño, Edgardo Donato y su formidable típica criolla” (The Eight Aces of Buenos Aires Tango). Vilardi performed alongside fellow bandoneón players José Roque Turturiello, Miguel Bonano, Eliseo Marchesse, and José Budano. As a composer, Vilardi is credited with “Esto es el colmo,” a tango first recorded on January 9, 1934, by vocalist Antonio Maida with Edgardo Donato’s orchestra for the RCA Victor label. The composition’s credits vary across sources: some attribute it to Vilardi along with Alberto Maraviglia and Leopoldo Amoroso, while others credit Edgardo Donato as the composer with Maraviglia as lyricist. Donato’s orchestra recorded for Brunswick Records and performed regularly in Buenos Aires cinemas, theaters, and on radio station LS9 Radio La Voz del Aire during this period.

Sources note: Composer credits for “Esto es el colmo” (1934) are inconsistent across sources. Some sources credit Vicente Vilardi with Alberto Maraviglia and Leopoldo Amoroso as composers, while others attribute the music to Edgardo Donato with lyrics by Alberto Maraviglia. The composition was first recorded January 9, 1934, by vocalist Antonio Maida.
