Biography
Roberto Morel (born Oscar Norberto Spinelli, May 25, 1926, in Buenos Aires; died 1991) was an Argentine tango singer and composer. He emerged as a vocalist during the golden age of Argentine tango, collaborating extensively with bandleader Edgardo Donato’s orchestra from 1953 to 1955, where he recorded approximately 29 tracks spanning tango, milonga, and vals genres. Beginning his professional career in 1946 with the Romeo-Spinelli vocal duo alongside Vicente Romeo (which dissolved in 1952), Morel secured his primary recording work after auditioning with Edgardo Donato, who suggested the stage name “Roberto Morel.” His recorded output included both interpretive performances—such as “Yo nací para Palermo” (1954, composed with Carlos Mayel)—and original compositions often reflecting his passion for horse racing and gambling culture. Beyond recording, he maintained an active performance and broadcast presence through the late 1950s and 1960s, appearing on radio programs and in notable Buenos Aires venues. Sources conflict regarding his exact death date: tango.info reports March 5, 1991, while Todotango.com and Wikidata indicate January 21, 1991.
