Típica Messiez
About
Típica Messiez is a 10-piece contemporary Argentine tango orchestra founded in 2019 and based in New York City. The ensemble is directed by pianist Emiliano Messiez, a Buenos Aires–born Latin Grammy nominee and one of the most in-demand tango pianists in the United States. The orchestra specializes in both traditional tango arrangements and original compositions, maintaining the instrumentation of a classic orquesta típica with violins, bandoneons, piano, and double bass. Notable ensemble members include Latin Grammy Award–winning bandoneonist Raúl Jaurena and violinist Sami Merdinian. Típica Messiez made its debut at the 2019 Philadelphia Tango Festival and has since performed at major venues including Lincoln Center and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The orchestra released the album Psicoporteño in 2023. As the only professional orquesta típica based in the United States, Típica Messiez represents a continuation of the golden-age tango orchestra tradition in contemporary performance.
