Sexteto Meridional

Also known as: Orquesta Típica Meridional

About

Sexteto Meridional was formed by Argentine pianist, arranger, and composer Pablo Estigarribia in 2011–2012. Composed initially of six musicians — bandoneonists Marco Antonio Fernandez and Nicolás Enrich, violinists Cesar Rago and Ramiro Miranda, bassist Nicolás Zacarias, and vocalist Esteban Riera — the ensemble debuted with the album Chapado a la antigua (Old-Fashioned Style) on January 1, 2012. The sexteto performed a traditional tango repertoire featuring both classic compositions and new arrangements by Estigarribia. The ensemble later expanded into the Orquesta Típica Meridional, recording Apología del tango (2016), which showcased arrangements of canonical tangos by Aníbal Troilo, Astor Piazzolla, and Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, alongside original compositions. Sexteto Meridional represents a contemporary approach to golden-age tango, blending respect for tradition with modern orchestral presentation, and has toured internationally including performances in Japan (2016). The ensemble embodies the educational and artistic mission of Estigarribia, a Latin Grammy award winner who has mentored under legendary figures such as Victor Lavallén and Emilio Balcarce.
