Selección Nacional De Tango

The Selección Nacional de Tango is an Argentine tango orchestra founded in 2005, conceived as a special reunion of some of the country’s finest tango performers across multiple generations. The ensemble’s distinctive concept involves accomplished musicians alternating between performing and arranging roles—a departure from traditional tango orchestration. The orchestra’s initial recorded performance took place on August 26–27, 2005, at Sala ND Ateneo in Buenos Aires. This live recording was released as the album “En Vivo” in 2007 and won the Premios Gardel for Best Tango Album. The orchestra features renowned bandoneón players including Leopoldo Federico, Ernesto Baffa, Rodolfo Mederos, and Walter Ríos, alongside accomplished violinists such as Mauricio Marcelli and Mario Abramovich, supported by a full string section and piano. The ensemble has continued to perform and record, releasing “Troilo 100 Años” in 2014. The Selección Nacional represents a significant collaborative project in contemporary Argentine tango, dedicated to preserving and reinterpreting classical tango repertoire.

Sources note: Recording date discrepancy: Some sources state August 27–28, 2005, while the Wikipedia article for “En Vivo” album specifies August 26–27, 2005. Both refer to the Sala ND Ateneo in Buenos Aires.
