Orquestra Ricardo Malerba
Also known as: Orquesta Ricardo Malerba, Ricardo Malerba y su Orquesta Típica, Orquestra Ricardo Malerba
About
Orquestra Ricardo Malerba was one of Argentine tango’s most celebrated ensembles, debuting at Radio Belgrano on March 1, 1938, under the baton of bandoneonist and composer Ricardo Francisco Malerba (nickname “Luz Demar”). The orchestra remained at Radio Belgrano for over two decades, becoming renowned throughout the Golden Age of tango for its sophisticated arrangements and distinctive swinging sound. Between 1941 and 1957, the ensemble recorded 38 pieces for Odeon Records, featuring prominent vocalists Orlando Medina and Antonio Maida. The orchestra’s signature compositions—including the tangos “Gitana rusa,” “La piba de los jazmines,” “Embrujamiento,” and “Remembranza,” along with waltzes such as “Aristocracia” and “Cuando florezcan las rosas”—remain central to tango’s classical repertoire. The orchestra appeared in films including “La vida de Carlos Gardel” (1940) and “Cita en la frontera,” and toured Brazil in 1952. Malerba’s musical identity was shaped by European travels in the late 1920s with Cátulo Castillo’s orchestra, influences reflected in the ensemble’s polished musicianship and compositional sophistication.
Sources note: No conflicting dates or credits discovered across sources. Recording dates for some pieces (particularly Orlando Medina collaborations in 1941–1945 period) are stated as ranges or single years rather than complete dates in some sources, reflecting typical archival limitations for recordings of this era.
