Orquesta Típica Sans Souci

Also known as: Orquesta Típica Sans Souci, Sans Souci, Típica Sans Souci

About

Orquesta Típica Sans Souci was founded in 1998 in Buenos Aires with the explicit goal of rescuing and performing the musical style of Miguel Caló and Osmar Maderna’s tango orchestras from the 1940s golden age. The ensemble follows the classical instrumentation of that decade: four bandoneons, four violins, cello, double bass, piano, and vocalist. Since original written arrangements were unavailable, the musicians transcribed their orchestrations directly from recordings by Caló and Maderna.

The orchestra has become recognized as one of the finest orquesta milonguera ensembles in Buenos Aires, performing regularly at the city’s leading milongas. Notable vocalists associated with the group include Walter Laborde, Chino Laborde, Emiliano Castignola, and César Peduzzi. The ensemble has recorded four albums: “Al estilo de los años cuarenta” (2003), “Acústico y monoaural” (2013), “Porteñísimo” (2020), and “Para Osmar Maderna” (2024), the latter a tribute to one of tango’s greatest masters.

Beyond Buenos Aires, Sans Souci has performed at major tango festivals including the Tango Buenos Aires Festival and World Championship, the International Tango Festival in Lisbon (2003), and the International Tango Summit in Los Angeles (2018). The orchestra has toured extensively throughout Europe, Latin America, and North America, performing in Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, Portugal, Paraguay, and Brazil.

Sources note: Foundation date varies between sources: some state 1998, others indicate “hacia fines de 1999” (late 1999). Album release dates show minor variations: “Al estilo de los años cuarenta” listed as both 2003 and 2004; “Acústico y monoaural” recorded in 2013 but sometimes listed as 2014.
