Orquesta Típica Porteña

About

Orquesta Típica Porteña was an Argentine tango orchestra created by RCA Victor in 1930 as a recording project. The ensemble was directed by pianist Adolfo Carabelli (1893–1947) and functioned as a Victor subsidiary with the same musicians as Orquesta Típica Víctor but under a distinct label name, operating from 1930 to 1931. The orchestra featured accomplished bandoneón players (Federico Scorticati, Carlos Marcucci, Luis Petrucelli, Ciriaco Ortiz), violinists (Elvino Vardaro, Manlio Francia, Antonio Rossi), and bassist Orlando Carabelli. Notable singers including Teófilo Ibáñez, Carlos Lafuente, Ernesto Famá, Alberto Gómez, and others performed with the ensemble across its 24 Victor recordings. The orchestra was revived in 1977–1981 under conductor Raúl Garello (bandoneon player from Troilo’s orchestra) as an accompanying ensemble for vocalist Roberto Goyeneche, recording several albums for RCA including “Percal” (1977), “Nada más que un corazón” (1978), and “Farol” (1981).

Sources note: MusicBrainz artist API returned Discogs artist ID 1296801, but multiple contemporary sources consistently reference Discogs artist 3303770 as the correct page for Orquesta Típica Porteña. The ensemble’s Wikipedia mention appears in general Orquesta Típica articles rather than a dedicated entry. Todotango biography of Adolfo Carabelli does not explicitly mention Orquesta Típica Porteña by name, though it confirms his role directing Victor recordings during 1930-1931.
