Orquesta Héctor Varela
Also known as: Orquesta Héctor Varela, Orquesta Típica Héctor Varela
About
Orquesta Héctor Varela was formed in 1939 by Salustiano Paco Varela, a renowned Argentine bandoneonist and arranger. Originally performing as a traditional dance orchestra, Varela reformed and strengthened his ensemble in 1951, incorporating prominent vocalists Armando Laborde and Rodolfo Lesica, pianist César Zagnoli, bandoneonists Antonio Marchese and Alberto San Miguel, and violinists Hugo Baralis and Mario Abramovich. The ensemble’s sound was characterized by precision and technical excellence, with a distinct rhythmic signature developed during Varela’s decade as D’Arienzo’s lead bandoneon and arranger (1940–1950). Known as “El As del Tango” (The Ace of Tango), Varela composed numerous tangos including Chichiponía and Te espero en Rodríguez Peña. His orchestra recorded over 383 tracks across multiple labels—Pampa (1950–1954) and Columbia (1954–1956)—and featured collaborations with singers including Argentino Ledesma, Ernesto Herrera, Raúl Lavié, and others. Varela’s orchestra became identified with music for dancers, filling dance halls throughout Buenos Aires and South America. The ensemble remained active through the 1970s, appearing frequently on the television program Grandes Valores del Tango. Varela’s legacy endures as a bridge between the traditional D’Arienzo style and the evolving tango sound of mid-twentieth-century Argentina.
Sources note: Sources give founder Salustiano Paco Varela’s birth as January 29, 1914 and death as January 30, 1987 (confirmed across Wikipedia, tango.info, and Todotango); the orchestra’s founding date is 1939 with reformation in 1951. Recording label transitions occurred from Pampa/Odeón (1950–1954) to Columbia (1954–1956).
