Orquesta El Arranque

About

Orquesta El Arranque is an Argentine tango orchestra founded in Buenos Aires in 1996 by double bassist Ignacio Varchausky and bandoneonist Camilo Ferrero. Originally formed as a quintet, the ensemble rapidly gained prominence within the tango community, performing over 200 shows in Argentine theatres and milongas during its inaugural year. Their self-titled debut album Tango (1998), sponsored by legendary figures Leopoldo Federico and Nelly Omar, achieved national and international acclaim, establishing El Arranque as a leading voice in contemporary tango by the year 2000. The orchestra’s progressive yet rooted approach to tango repertory—combining classical compositions with original works and reflecting influences from Osvaldo Pugliese’s musical legacy—has resonated with both traditionalists and modernist dancers. El Arranque achieved significant milestones including collaborations with jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center (2001), a Clarín Prize, two Konex Awards, and the Carlos Gardel Award for Best Tango Recording (2004). The ensemble has toured extensively across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and beyond, while maintaining an active recording presence spanning multiple decades. Notable collaborations include work with singers Lidia Borda and Ariel Ardit, and partnerships with composers including Ramiro Gallo and Leopoldo Federico. As of 2022, the orchestra continues to perform and record, sustaining its commitment to creative tango expression.
