Nicolás Guerschberg
Also known as: Nicolás Guerschberg Sexteto
About
The Nicolás Guerschberg Sexteto is a contemporary tango ensemble formed in Buenos Aires circa 2001. Led by pianist, composer, and arranger Nicolás Guerschberg (born 1975), the sexteto comprises bandoneón (Alejandro Guerschberg), violin (César Rago), bass clarinet (Martín Pantyrer), double bass (Juan Pablo Navarro), and electric guitar (Esteban Falabella). Blending tango with jazz and chamber music influences, the ensemble created an innovative sound situated at the intersection of genres. The project emerged in parallel with the TangoContempo artistic collective, a workshop fostering new compositions in the contemporary tango scene. The group released their album “Movimientos porteños” (Epsa Music, 2011), featuring five original Guerschberg compositions. Active in Buenos Aires cultural institutions and festivals, the sexteto represents the evolution of tango into a fusion-oriented contemporary practice that honors the genre’s roots while exploring new compositional territories.
Sources note: The sexteto’s formation date is described in sources as “ten years before 2011,” placing it around 2001. No Wikipedia articles in English or Spanish were found for this contemporary ensemble, which is common for smaller contemporary orchestras outside the golden age (1920–1950) classical tango canon.
