La Juan D’Arienzo

La Juan D’Arienzo is a contemporary Argentine tango orchestra established in 2012 in Buenos Aires to honor and perpetuate the distinctive musical style of the legendary “Rey del Compás,” Juan D’Arienzo (1900–1976). The ensemble is directed by bandoneonist Facundo Lázzari, grandson of Carlos Lazzari, who served as first bandoneón and arranger for the original Juan D’Arienzo Orchestra from 1950 until the maestro’s death in 1976. The orchestra features approximately 11 musicians including violins, piano, bass, additional bandoneóns, and vocalist Fernando Rodas, whose expressive voice captures the characteristic rhythmic variations and emotional depth of D’Arienzo’s compositions. Musically, La Juan D’Arienzo distinguishes itself by returning to the fundamental 2×4 rhythm characteristic of tango’s early styles while employing modern arrangements and instrumentation. The orchestra has conducted extensive international tours across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Latin America since its 2012 debut, bringing the swinging, rhythmically driving D’Arienzo sound to contemporary milongas worldwide. In 2018, La Juan D’Arienzo received the prestigious Premios Tango award for Best Orchestra, recognition of its dedication to preserving and evolving this essential chapter of tango heritage.
