José Basso y su Orquesta Típica

Also known as: Orquesta José Basso, El cuatro de Pepe Basso

About

José Basso y su Orquesta Típica was formed in 1947 by pianist and conductor José Hipólito Basso, following his tenure as pianist with Aníbal Troilo’s renowned orchestra. The ensemble became known for establishing what Basso termed “a conjunto of danceable character, but of unquestionable quality”—sophisticated interpretations of tango standards that remained accessible for dancing. The orchestra featured accomplished instrumentalists including bandoneón players Julio Ahumada and Eduardo Rovira, violinists Mauricio Mise, Francisco Oréfice, Rodolfo Fernández, and Domingo Serra, plus cellist Leopoldo Marafiotti and bassist Rafael del Bagno.

The ensemble’s initial singers were the duo Ortega del Cerro and Ricardo Ruiz, with Francisco Fiorentino joining in 1949. Over four decades, Basso’s orchestra featured some of tango’s finest vocalists, including Jorge Durán, Oscar Ferrari, Floreal Ruiz (with whom the orchestra recorded over 150 tracks from 1963 onwards), Alfredo Belusi, Héctor De Rosas, and Carlos Rossi. Beginning in 1949, the orchestra recorded prolifically for Odeon, RCA, and other labels, documenting approximately 300 performances and leaving behind over 1,400 tracks by 1986.

Basso achieved distinction as one of the first conductors to successfully incorporate Astor Piazzolla’s complex compositions—including “Adiós Nonino,” “Contratiempo,” “Para lucirse,” and “Prepárense”—into the milonga repertoire while respecting both traditional dance rhythms and Piazzolla’s advanced musical concepts. His orchestra maintained prominence during periods when tango experienced declining popularity. A highly successful tour of Japan (1967–1970) brought international recognition. In 1985, Basso received the Konex Award for Diploma of Merit as Best Orquesta Típica Conductor, cementing his legacy as a master of orchestral tango interpretation.
