About

Gotan Project is a Franco-Swiss-Argentine electronic tango ensemble formed in 1999 in Paris, France. The collective unites Argentine guitarist Eduardo Makaroff, French producer and DJ Philippe Cohen Solal, and Swiss composer Christoph H. Müller (formerly of Touch El Arab). Their name, derived from “tango” reversed using vesre—a playful linguistic technique of Rioplatense Spanish—also references a legendary Buenos Aires café founded in 1964. Pioneering the “neotango” or “electrotango” sound, Gotan Project seamlessly blends traditional Argentine tango instrumentation with electronic production, samples, hip-hop beats, and contemporary techniques. Their internationally acclaimed 2001 debut album La Revancha del Tango sold over one million copies worldwide. The ensemble achieved global recognition through the 2004 film Shall We Dance?, which prominently featured their signature track “Santa María (del Buen Ayre),” also heard in The Bourne Identity (2002) and Knight and Day (2010). Following successful tours and BBC Radio 1 broadcasts, they released Lunático (2006) and Tango 3.0 (2010), the latter earning platinum certification in France. Gotan Project remains central figures in modernizing tango music for contemporary international audiences.
