Orquesta Típica Fernández Fierro

Orquesta Típica Fernández Fierro is an Argentine tango orchestra founded in 2001 in Buenos Aires, emerging during a period of significant social upheaval in Argentina. Co-founded by bandoneón player Pablo Gignoli and violinist Federico Terranova, the ensemble comprises primarily graduates of the Escuela de Música Popular de Avellaneda. Currently directed by Yuri Venturin (contrabass and vocals), the orchestra draws inspiration from mid-twentieth-century tango ensembles, particularly Osvaldo Pugliese, infusing this classical foundation with punk-rock attitude and aggressive sonority. Their distinctive approach challenges traditional tango conventions, blending theatrical staging with expressionist aesthetics. Operating as a cooperative, they independently produce recordings and manage Club Atlético Fernández Fierro (CAFF) in Buenos Aires’s Abasto neighborhood, where they perform regularly. The ensemble has toured extensively throughout Europe, Oceania, and Latin America, appearing at venues including London’s Barbican Centre and New York’s Joe’s Pub. Recognized by Argentina’s Konex Foundation (2015) and multiple Gardel Award nominations, the orchestra represents a vital contemporary reinterpretation of tango’s legacy, successfully modernizing and globalizing Argentina’s most iconic musical tradition.
