Fabio Hager Sexteto

Also known as: Sexteto Fabio Hager

About

Fabio Gabriel Hager is a bandoneonist, composer, and music director based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Born circa 1968–1969, he studied bandoneon under Domingo Mattio (a former member of Aníbal Troilo’s orchestra) and composition with Pedro Aguilar. Beginning in 1989, Hager represented Argentina internationally, touring Brazil, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Taiwan, Japan, and the United States. He performed with Sexteto Sur from 1989 to 2003, then founded the Fabio Hager Sexteto around 2006. His music blends traditional tango roots with contemporary and avant-garde arrangements. The sexteto features violin, cello, contrabass, and piano alongside Hager’s bandoneon. His composition “Encanto Rojo” (2008) gained international recognition when tango dance world championship couples performed it at the 2008–2009 Mundiales. Hager has been honored with the Estrella de Mar award (Mar del Plata, 1998) and the Premio Min On a la Cultura (Tokyo, 2012). He has composed multiple pieces dedicated to Min-On founder Dr. Daisaku Ikeda. The sexteto maintains an active recording and touring schedule, having completed a 25-date Japan tour in early 2025.

Sources note: No significant date conflicts found across sources. Todotango biography states “starting in 1989” for international representation; the Min-On interview confirms 1993 Japan tour with Juan D’Arienzo. Sexteto Sur membership period confirmed as 1989–2003 by multiple sources. Sexteto formation date inferred as ~2006 from interview stating 1998–2003 with Sexteto Sur, then forming namesake sexteto (exact year not explicitly stated).
