About

Ensemble Hyperion is an Italian tango orchestra founded in 1991 in La Spezia by Carlo Emanuele Barbanente and conductor Bruno Fiorentini. Their inaugural concert took place on January 19, 1992, featuring 14 musicians exploring contemporary music styles including chamber theatre, minimalism, and modern tango. The ensemble became renowned internationally for its deep engagement with the works of Astor Piazzolla and traditional Argentine tango repertoire.

Conducting Bruno Fiorentini (flute) and artistic director Valerio Giannarelli shaped the ensemble’s artistic vision. Over three decades of activity, Ensemble Hyperion has performed more than 1,200 concerts across Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. In 1998, they recorded their landmark debut album “Livin’ Tango” at Genoa’s Carlo Felice Theatre, featuring Piazzolla compositions. The ensemble has collaborated with celebrated bandoneonists including Luis Stazo, Juan José Mosalini, Daniel Binelli, and Alfredo Marcucci. Since 1999, they have organized the international TangoWorld Festival in Fivizzano, Tuscany. With a discography of eleven albums ranging from contemporary tango to period-style arrangements of golden-age orchestras, Ensemble Hyperion remains a significant force in European tango performance and education.
