El Muro Tango

El Muro Tango is an Argentine-Norwegian tango ensemble formed in November 2016 by Argentine pianist and composer Juan Pablo de Lucca and Norwegian violinist Karl Espegard. De Lucca, a relative (described variously as nephew or grandson) of legendary tango singer Alberto Castillo, brought deep tango tradition to the collaboration, while Espegard brought classical training and European sensibilities to the ensemble.

The core ensemble features piano (De Lucca), violin (Espegard), bandoneon (Åsbjørg Ryeng), and double bass (Sebastian Noya), with rotating vocalists including Argentine singers Juan Villarreal and, later, the acclaimed Omar Mollo. The group is celebrated for its “exceptional craftsmanship” (Songlines Magazine), blending authentic tango tradition with modern harmonic language, delivering performances marked by great energy, captivating melancholy, and delicate subtleties.

Following their debut album Nostálgico (2018, Galileo Music), El Muro Tango achieved international recognition, including a sold-out performance at Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw in 2019. The ensemble has appeared at major European tango and jazz festivals including Innsbruck Tango Festival and Jazzkaar. Their second studio album Manifiesto (2023, Sony Music Argentina), featuring vocalist Omar Mollo, further established their place in contemporary tango, reaching both European and South American audiences since 2016.

Sources note: Sources describe Juan Pablo de Lucca’s relationship to Alberto Castillo variously as “nephew” (stated in multiple sources including early profiles) and “grandson” (Infobea articles refer to him as “heredero”/heir with implied grandson relationship). The exact familial connection requires clarification from primary sources.
