Cuarteto Rotterdam
Also known as: Cuarteto Rotterdam Ensemble
About
Cuarteto Rotterdam is a German-Dutch tango ensemble founded in 2004 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, by Michael Dolak (bandoneón), Susanne Cordula Welsch (violin), Judy Ruks (piano), and Frances Dorling (double bass), who met while studying at the Rotterdam Academy for World Music. The ensemble relocated to Germany in 2007 and is now based in Berlin, Stuttgart, and Meißen. Their classic chamber configuration delivers an ardent tango sound spanning Guardia Vieja through contemporary Tango Nuevo, with particular affinity for the Golden Age works of Di Sarli, Troilo, D’Arienzo, and Pugliese. The current lineup features pianist Judy Ruks, violinist Susanne Cordula Welsch, bandoneónist Michael Dolak, and bassist Facundo Leonidas Di Pietro. Cuarteto Rotterdam has earned international recognition, winning first prize in the instrumental-group category at the 48th International Accordion Competition Klingenthal (2011). Since 2004, they have performed extensively across Europe, Argentina, Turkey, and North America, recording six major albums including Yunta De Oro (2007), Deleitante (2009), and Buenos Aires Today (2024).
Sources note: Wikidata lists Cuarteto Rotterdam’s start date as 27 February 2012, but all verified primary sources (official website, German Wikipedia, MusicBrainz) consistently document the ensemble’s founding as 2004 at Rotterdam Academy for World Music. The 2012 date appears to be erroneous. Regarding personnel, founding member Frances Dorling (double bass) eventually departed; subsequent basists included Tino Scholz (2008–2013) and Anna-Maria Huhn (2014–2019), with current bassist Facundo Leonidas Di Pietro from Argentina (since 2019 or later). Album release dates show minor variations across sources: Un Placer was released as CD in 2018 and reissued as LP in 2020; Misa a Buenos Aires Misatango carries both 2016 and 2017 attributions.
