Color Tango

Color Tango (Orquesta Color Tango) is an Argentine tango orchestra founded in 1989 by Roberto Álvarez (1940–2023), first bandoneonist and arranger of Osvaldo Pugliese’s legendary orchestra. Created as the “legitimate successor” to Pugliese’s ensemble, the orchestra debuted in the Netherlands in 1990 with twenty-six concerts, establishing itself as a guardian of Pugliese’s musical style and philosophical approach to tango.

The founding ensemble included violinist Fernando Rodríguez and bassist Amílcar Tolosa, with Álvarez leading as conductor, bandoneón player, composer, and arranger. Over more than three decades, Color Tango released twelve studio albums—ranging from interpretations of Pugliese’s unpublished works (Pugliese Inédito, 2005) to pedagogical dance-oriented series (Con Estilo Para Bailar) and original compositions. The orchestra toured extensively across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, performing at major tango festivals and concert halls worldwide, and maintained a steady presence in Buenos Aires’ milonga circuits and on national radio and television.

Following Álvarez’s retirement from the stage in December 2021 and his death on March 5, 2023, the orchestra continued under the direction of Ramiro Boero as first bandoneon. The ensemble released Sentido Único in 2023, featuring Álvarez’s final recordings and arrangements with the current musicians, ensuring the continuity of the orchestra’s mission to preserve and advance the Pugliese legacy.
