Carel Kraayenhof & Kraayenhof Tango Ensemble

Also known as: Kraayenhof Tango Ensemble, Carel Kraayenhof Ensemble, KTE

About

The Carel Kraayenhof Ensemble (also known as Kraayenhof Tango Ensemble or KTE) was founded in September 2011 in the Netherlands by bandoneonist Carel Kraayenhof. The ensemble specialized in tango nuevo and the intersection between classical and world music, blending compositions by Astor Piazzolla with original works. Led by Kraayenhof, the group featured pianist Juan Pablo Dobal, violinists Bert Vos and Iefke Wang, cellist Jan Willem Troost, and bassist Jaap Branderhorst. Active from 2011 to 2018, the ensemble earned recognition on national and international stages for delivering music marked by “drama, conviction, energy and joy.” Notable albums include ¡Fuerza! (2012), Liberación (2014), and ¡30! Passionate Tango Years (2018). The ensemble was dissolved in 2018, after which Kraayenhof continued performing primarily as a duo with Juan Pablo Dobal and with other formations including his earlier Sexteto Canyengue ensemble.

Sources note: Sources give inconsistent member listings for different periods of the ensemble. Some sources list Tijmen Huisingh (violin) joining in July 2011, while others list different violinists (Bert Vos, Iefke Wang) as core members in different periods. The ensemble dissolved in 2018, though the exact month/date of dissolution is not specified in sources; the final album (¡30! Passionate Tango Years) was released in 2018. Formation sources agree on September 2011 as the founding month.
