Beltango

About

Beltango is a tango orchestra formed in Belgrade, Serbia, in 1998 by bandoneonist and composer Aleksandar Nikolic, establishing itself as the first authentic tango orchestra from the Balkans. The quintet consists of Aleksandar Nikolic (bandoneon), Ivana Nikolic (piano and vocals), Antonija Barna (violin), Bogdan Pejic (electric guitar), and Petar Holik (double bass). The ensemble performs a comprehensive repertoire encompassing classical tango, the tango nuevo compositions of Astor Piazzolla, and original Balkango works that blend tango traditions with Balkan musical influences. With over 1,500 concerts across more than 30 countries, Beltango has earned international recognition, culminating in 2007 when they became the only European tango orchestra invited by the Ministry of Culture of Buenos Aires to perform at the World Tango Festival. Their artistry was honored with the prestigious Astor Piazzolla Award. Beyond concert performances, the group creates theatrical spectacles such as La Bombonera and Balkan Tango, combining music, dance, and drama. Their discography spans nine albums from Beltango Nuevo plays Piazzolla (2001) to Sonrisas de Bandoneón (2025), reflecting mastery of tradition alongside contemporary innovation.
