Alfredo De Angelis y su orquesta típica

Also known as: Orquesta Alfredo De Angelis

About

Alfredo De Angelis y su orquesta típica was one of Argentina’s most prolific and beloved tango ensembles, formed in 1940 and debuting on March 20, 1941, at Café Marzotto in Buenos Aires. Led by pianist and composer Alfredo De Angelis, the orchestra distinguished itself through its unwavering commitment to danceable tango, eschewing the experimental arrangements favored by contemporaries in favor of simple, elegant music with efficient rhythm and careful melodic respect. This adherence to tango’s functional roots became its signature.

The ensemble gained prominence through the Glostora Tango Club radio program (1946–1968), which became Argentina’s most popular musical broadcast. De Angelis became a pioneering champion of the vocal duet format, most famously pairing singers Carlos Dante and Julio Martel in memorable recordings of “Pregonera” (1945), “Remolino” (1946), and “Pastora.” Other notable vocalists included Floreal Ruiz (the first singer), Oscar Larroca, Juan Carlos Godoy, Roberto Florio, and Roberto Mancini. Recording exclusively for Odeón Records from 1943 to 1977, the orchestra accumulated 486 published recordings—among tango music’s most substantial legacies. Its accessible style and prolific output made it a cornerstone of the Golden Age.

Sources note: Birth year of bandleader Alfredo De Angelis varies across sources: Wikipedia (EN) states November 2, 1910; Wikipedia (ES) and tango.info both list November 2, 1912. This does not affect the orchestra entity itself, but relates to its leader whose personal biography appears on the separate musician post (ID 36790).
