Mercedes Sosa

Also known as: Haydée Mercedes Sosa Girón, la Negra, Haydée Marta Mercedes Sosa Girón

Biography

Haydée Marta Mercedes Sosa Girón (9 July 1935 – 4 October 2009) was an Argentine folk singer and contralto who became one of the most iconic voices of Latin American music and the Nueva Canción movement. Born in San Miguel de Tucumán to working-class parents with mestizo, French, Spanish, and Diaguita heritage, she earned the nickname “la Negra” referencing her indigenous roots. At fifteen, she won a local radio competition in 1950, launching a career spanning nearly six decades. Her 1965 breakthrough performance at the Cosquín National Folklore Festival established her as a preeminent interpreter of Latin American folk traditions and socially conscious song. During Argentina’s 1976–1982 military dictatorship, she faced arrest, death threats, and exile in Paris and Madrid, returning triumphantly in 1982 to sold-out Teatro Ópera performances. Her extensive discography of 173 albums recorded during her lifetime documented collaborations with international artists including Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, and Francesco Battiato, alongside interpretations of canonical works by Violeta Parra, Atahualpa Yupanqui, and Charly García. Known as “the voice of the voiceless ones” and “the conscience of Latin America,” she received six Latin Grammy Awards, the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2004), and France’s Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres. She died in Buenos Aires from multiple organ failure; President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner declared three days of national mourning.
