Biography
Héctor Alvarado (1925–2015) was an Argentine tango singer from Córdoba whose real name was Nicolás Rafael Cisterna. Beginning his career in the late 1940s with Lorenzo Barbero’s orchestra in Córdoba clubs and radio stations, he relocated to Buenos Aires in 1945 to pursue professional singing. His most productive recording years were 1950–1956, when he performed with leading orchestras including those of Lucio Demare (1950–1951), Alberto Mancione (1954–1956), and ensembles led by Pedro Maffia and Pedro Laurenz. Notable recordings from this era include “Noche de reyes” (1950) and “Malena” (1951) with Demare, and “Tan lejos” and “En blanco y negro” with Mancione. In 1959, he joined the Quinteto Garufa organised by José Canet, where he sang lead vocals on the group’s carefree-style arrangements. Though he gradually withdrew from professional performance, Alvarado made a notable public appearance at the 2011 Festival Nacional del Tango in La Falda, Córdoba, at age 86, performing and recording classic tango standards.
