Also known as: Guillermito Fernández, Guillermo Fernández

Biography

Guillermo Fernández, born January 28, 1958, in San Telmo, Buenos Aires, is one of Argentina’s most prominent tango singers, composers, producers, and arrangers. A child prodigy who debuted on Argentine television at age five in 1963, he trained under legendary figures including Aníbal Troilo and Roberto Goyeneche. After international success in the United States during the 1980s—including a CBS television contest win and performances in Las Vegas—he returned to Argentina in 1998 to pursue tango full-time. Fernández has starred in major operatic tango works, notably “María de Buenos Aires” (Piazzolla/Ferrer) and “Crimen Pasional” (Piazzolla). Renowned for his refined phrasing and extensive vocal range, he has performed with Argentina’s leading orchestras and won the Konex Prize as Best Tango Singer of the Decade in 2005 and 2015. His album “Tangos” (2001) won the prestigious Gardel Prize for Music. He has recorded over sixteen studio albums spanning from 1976 to 2023, establishing himself as a defining voice in contemporary Argentine tango.
