Florindo Sassone
Also known as: Pedro Florindo Sassone
Biography
Pedro Florindo Sassone was an Argentine violinist, composer, and orchestra leader born January 12, 1912, in Liniers, Buenos Aires, and died January 31, 1982. After training as a violin teacher and making his professional debut with Antonio Polito’s ensemble on Radio Belgrano, he progressed to Roberto Firpo’s orchestra before forming his first ensemble in 1935, debuting on January 1, 1936. Following a 1940–1946 hiatus for personal business, his reappearance marked the beginning of his most successful period. The pivotal discovery of vocalist Jorge Casal in 1947 transformed his orchestra into a major force in tango; their partnership through 1950 produced celebrated RCA Victor recordings. Sassone’s compositions included the milonga “Baldosa floja” (with Julio Bocazzi) and tango “Madreselva,” establishing him as both performer and creator. His style blended influences from Osvaldo Fresedo and Carlos Di Sarli while maintaining distinctive melodic clarity and emphasis on varied instrumental textures. From the 1960s onward, he led large ensembles and toured internationally, including to Japan (1966, 1972) and throughout South America. Recording across multiple labels—RCA Victor, Odeon, Carmusic, País, Music Hall, Embassy, Microfón—he collaborated with notable singers including Roberto Chanel, Rodolfo Galé, and Zulema Robles. His lush orchestrations and sophisticated arrangements secured his place in mid-century Argentine tango history.
