Carlos Morel (born Carlos Daniel González, January 7, 1958 in Avellaneda, Buenos Aires, Argentina) is an Argentine tango vocalist, bandoneón player, and guitarist. He studied vocal technique and chamber singing with tenor Fernando Galvé and tango dance with instructors “Pepito” Avellaneda and “Pocho” Pizarro. Making his professional debut in 1978 with Eduardo del Piano’s orchestra at the legendary Marabú venue, Morel won the 1980 television competition “Grandes Valores del Tango,” leading to his engagement with maestro Héctor Varela’s orchestra (1980–1983), where he recorded albums for CBS Columbia. He collaborated extensively with dancer Juan Carlos Copes and in 1990 joined the original cast of Luis Bravo’s “Forever Tango,” touring internationally and making his Broadway debut in 1997. The original 1998 RCA cast recording featured Morel prominently. As a solo artist, he released notable albums including “Qué tango hay que cantar” (2003, nominated for a Gardel Award) and “El Cantor de Buenos Aires” (2010). Recognized for his contributions to tango, Morel has taught successive generations of singers and performed regularly at prestigious Buenos Aires venues including El Viejo Almacén and as part of the “Tango Porteño” ensemble.
