Bigeschi

Biography

Alfredo Bigeschi (1908–1981) was an Italian-Argentine violinist, lyricist, composer, and journalist who became a prolific contributor to the tango repertoire. Born December 18, 1908, in Portoferraio, Elba Island, Italy, he immigrated to Argentina at age 12, settling in La Boca and Avellaneda, Buenos Aires. Beginning in 1923, Bigeschi wrote lyrics for carnival songs and published his first tango, “Tenorios de mi barrio,” in 1924. At 16, he collaborated with renowned musician Juan Maglio “Pacho,” whose composition of Bigeschi’s verse created “Tango argentino,” which premiered via singer Ignacio Corsini in 1929 and was recorded by Carlos Gardel that December. Over his lifetime, Bigeschi accumulated approximately 260 registered compositions across tangos, boleros, and waltzes. He collaborated extensively with composers including Miguel Bonano and Enrique Rodríguez. Beyond music, Bigeschi worked as a journalist for La Razón newspaper and founded the magazine Radiocine, also writing 36 radionovelas. He died March 25, 1981, in Buenos Aires.

Sources note: None documented. Birth and death dates are consistent across sources (December 18, 1908 – March 25, 1981). Birthplace is consistently cited as Portoferraio, Elba Island, Italy; immigration to Argentina dated April 27, 1920 (age 12). One early source briefly listed birthplace as La Boca, Buenos Aires, but this contradicts all other authoritative sources and likely reflects confusion with his settlement location upon immigration.
