Alfredo Marcucci
Also known as: Alfredo Marcucci (bandoneonist), Master Alfredo Marcucci
Biography
Alfredo Marcucci (September 14, 1929 – June 12, 2010) was an Argentine bandoneonist, conductor, and arranger of tango music. Born in Ensenada, Buenos Aires, he learned the bandoneon from his uncle Carlos Marcucci, a noted virtuoso. Beginning in 1947, Marcucci performed with the major tango orchestras of the era, including those led by Julio de Caro, Raúl Kaplún, Horacio Salgán, and Carlos di Sarli, gaining renown for his expressive playing and arrangement skills. From the early 1960s, he served as regular bandoneonist and arranger with Los Paraguayos, the Paraguayan folk ensemble, touring globally and contributing to several gold-record releases before departing in 1976.
After a two-decade hiatus devoted to family life in Belgium, Marcucci was revitalized in the 1980s by musicians Juan Masondo and Dirk Van Esbroeck, with whom he founded Tango al Sur, becoming instrumental in Argentina’s tango revival in Europe. He later established Veritango and taught extensively at Brussels Conservatory and summer intensives in southern France, influencing prominent students including Carel Kraayenhof and Leo Vervelde. In 2004, Turin invited him to form and direct Orquesta Típica Alfredo Marcucci, Italy’s first authentic Argentine tango orchestra. He recorded prolifically with Ensemble Piacevole for Channel Classics, leaving a lasting legacy as both performer and educator until his death in Landen, Belgium.
Sources note: One source (Tangofilia) listed birth year as 1920, but the overwhelming preponderance of reliable sources (Wikidata, MusicBrainz, Todotango, tango02, Dutch Wikipedia) confirm September 14, 1929 as the correct birth date. Minor spelling variation: birthplace recorded as both ‘Ensenada’ and ‘Ensanada’ across sources, but ‘Ensenada’ is the standard spelling.
